What is an Idea Worth?

Jun 1, 2006

Dr. George Korenko, a partner at Edgeworth Economics, co-authored the chapter “What is an Idea Worth?” in The Intellectual Property Debate: Perspectives from Law, Economics, and Political Economy.

This chapter discusses three general approaches to valuing intangibles—the cost approach, market approach, and income approach—and different forums in which these approaches are applied, including acquisitions and divestitures, licensing, financial reporting, tax compliance, litigation, and bankruptcy. Dr. Korenko argues that using internally consistent inputs across forums is important to ensure that each valuation can withstand scrutiny if reviewed in the context of another forum.
